On March 4, 2024, at 11:49 WIB, a camera trap successfully captured images of the Javan Rhino calf with its mother, which is suspected to be a newborn.
Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE), expressed his excitement over the discovery of the baby rhino. He emphasized that his team will continue to monitor the development of this baby rhino as they do for other rhinos.
“Thank God, this is good news and proves that the Javan Rhino in the world, which only exists in Ujung Kulon, can thrive and be sustainable,” he said.
The presence of the new Javan Rhino calf was based on the results of the Javan Rhino Monitoring (MBJ) conducted between February and April 2024. The MBJ results were then analyzed physically by Javan Rhino identification experts, in collaboration with partners and academics.
This achievement is inseparable from the improvement of the camera trap installation method using a systematic sampling approach (cluster). Monitoring activities were carried out between February and April 2024, successfully installing a total of 126 camera traps.
Estimated to be 3-5 months old
After being identified by the team, the new Javan Rhino calf is estimated to be between 3 and 5 months old and has been temporarily given the ID.093.2024. Its gender could not yet be identified because its body position was not directly in front of the camera trap. There are no special features or defects visible from its body appearance, so it can be categorized as a normal body.
Meanwhile, the identification of the mother shows that the rhino has a fairly clear horn. The head is not clearly visible so facial features cannot be identified. The right and left ears are normal (without scars or defects).
The left flap is intact and the right side is not visible, and the tail is normal. However, the name and ID of the mother rhino could not be clearly identified because the position of the rhino was too close to the camera trap.
The recording of the Javan Rhino calf is a follow-up finding, after previously in 2022 and 2023, two new Javan Rhino calves were successfully recorded on camera in TNUK with ID.091.2022 (female) and ID.092.2023 (female).
The presence of one new Javan Rhino calf in 2024 is the result of the hard work of the Javan Rhino monitoring team who work tirelessly, and the implementation of the Fully Protected Area policy in the Ujung Kulon Peninsula.
Satyawan emphasized the importance of not being complacent about the joy of this discovery. Although the Javan Rhino can reproduce, this does not guarantee that the Javan Rhino habitat and population are safe from various threats.
Poaching activities, the presence of predators such as jackals or wild dogs, diseases, potential genetic problems such as inbreeding depression, and natural disasters remain serious threats to the existence and sustainability of the Javan Rhino.
“Therefore, we and all parties involved in the Javan Rhino conservation efforts should not be careless and always anticipate any threats that may occur,” he said.
