javaprivatetour.com – If you’ve ever wandered through the quiet hills of Gunungkidul, you’ll know how the land feels warm and generous. Cassava grows everywhere here, shaping the daily lives of the people who call this limestone region home. For generations, cassava has been transformed into gaplek and tiwul—two foods that once carried families through difficult seasons. Today, that same humble root is opening new doors, connecting a small Javanese village to the world in the most unexpected way: through cassava instant noodles.
From Gaplek and Tiwul to Cassava Instant Noodles
Gaplek is dried cassava—peeled, sliced, then sun-soaked until it hardens into something that lasts through the year. Tiwul is its softer sibling, made by pounding gaplek into flour and steaming it until it becomes chewy and lightly sweet. These foods tell the story of endurance, of resourceful families who cooked with whatever the land gave them.
But traditions evolve. In Padukuhan Sumberejo, a quiet hamlet in Ngawu Village, a new idea was born: instant noodles made from mocaf—Modified Cassava Flour. Mocaf is created by fermenting cassava, softening its aroma and producing a fine, white flour with a lighter texture. It carries one special advantage: it’s naturally gluten-free. For travelers with dietary restrictions, it’s a rare gift in the world of noodles.
The Women Behind the Innovation
The heart of this story belongs to Suti Rahayu, a 72-year-old woman with the energy of someone half her age. She formed the Kelompok Wanita Tani (Women Farmers Group) Putri 21 back in 2006, gathering 21 village women with one dream—lifting one another through shared skills and shared work.
The early days were far from smooth. When they first attempted to produce noodles, disaster struck. Five hundred kilograms of mocaf were wasted. The dough refused to bind. Noodles snapped. The taste was far from acceptable. Anyone else might have stopped there, but these women didn’t.
“We didn’t give up,” Suti said with a smile that carries years of struggle and triumph. “With prayer and perseverance, we finally made local Mi Ayo—our own cassava instant noodles from Jogja.”
National Support and BRIN’s Contribution
Their persistence drew attention. The Department of Agriculture stepped in with training and equipment. Then BRIN, Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency, paired scientific insight with village wisdom to improve the product.
The result? Practical cup noodles ready to be brewed with hot water—just like any commercial instant noodle. Today, flavors range from classic chicken and onion to the spicy notes beloved across Java. Prices remain affordable, from Rp 5,000 to Rp 9,000 depending on the gluten level.
Sales are handled by dedicated members using social media and online shops. Orders now arrive from beyond Indonesia—a remarkable leap for a village once known simply for cassava fields.
From Gunungkidul to Japan
One day, researchers from Japan arrived. They weren’t just curious about mocaf—they wanted to learn the village’s zero-waste philosophy. The women of Putri 21 use everything: even firewood for cooking is purchased from local residents, creating a circular economy where everyone benefits.
Today, the group has grown to 45 active members. Seven focus on noodle production, while others create snacks from mocaf. What began as a challenge has become a source of pride—an example of how culture, innovation, and perseverance can transform a community.
