Day 1: Surabaya to Rajegwesi

Rajegwesi Beach at Merubetiri National Park Banyuwangi East Java

Your journey begins with a pick-up from Surabaya International Airport and a scenic drive to the Lodge in Rajegwesi Area, part of Merubetiri National Park. After checking in and settling into your cozy lodge, take a leisurely walk along the pristine Rajegwesi Beach and soak up the breathtaking views.

Rajegwesi Beach has smaller waves compared to beaches in the southern sea in general. Therefore, many residents around the beach work as fishermen and can sail peacefully. The row of boats on the beach further colors the scenery at Rajegwesi Beach. This beach has brown sand because it is mixed with sediment from river mud carried to the sea. Due to the many fishermen docking at this beach, in the morning, the area on the beach becomes busy with the hustle and bustle of fish auctions conducted by fishermen and buyers who want to get fresh fish from their catch.

Rajegwesi Beach itself was initially discovered during the Japanese occupation when they built observation bunkers behind the capil hill to the west of the beach. Even the name Rajegwesi itself comes from the Japanese navy defense force at that time, which was taken from the Javanese language. The word “rajeg” means pile while “wesi” means iron, so when combined it means iron piles. However, the piles driven by the Japanese in the waters of Rajegwesi Bay are made of teak wood which has strength equivalent to iron and driven into the bay mouth with sap where the front and back parts are made to close the gap.

Day 2: Brown Sugar, Dragon Fruit, and Green Bay Exploration

Rise and shine, explorers! Day two promises a bevy of exciting experiences. Fuel up with a hearty breakfast before delving into the intricacies of brown sugar processing and marveling at the vibrant dragon fruit fields. On the way to Teluk Hijau Beach, we will encounter a unique place in the Sungai Lembu area, Banyuwangi, namely the brown sugar factory. Located precisely in the Meru Betiri National Park area. Upon entering the factory area, the fragrant aroma of brown sugar mixes with the smoke from the wood fire. Several workers can be seen cooking the brown sugar liquid with three blazing stoves and large pans. I feel fortunate to witness this brown sugar-making process. The main ingredient for making brown sugar is coconut sap, cooked with constant heat using firewood until thickened. It is then molded and cooled. After being removed from the mold, the brown sugar is ready to be marketed.

Then, it’s off to Green Bay or Teluk Hijau Beach, a pristine oasis boasting crystalline waters and powdery white sands. Teluk Hijau Beach is a beach located at the southwestern tip of Banyuwangi Regency within the Meru Betiri National Park area, precisely situated in Sarongan Village, Pesanggaran District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java Province. This beach is shaped like a bay, with a landmass jutting steeply towards the ocean. This creates a relatively narrow perspective from Teluk Hijau Beach in Banyuwangi. However, this is precisely what makes it appealing. The green and lush scenery on the left and right sides of the surrounding hills adds to its charm. Also known as Green Bay, this beach has a unique allure compared to other beaches. Its attraction lies in the sea water, which has a greener hue. This phenomenon is rarely found on other beaches around Banyuwangi.

Get ready for a thrilling ride as we traverse the jungle en route to Sukamade aboard our trusty jeep. Upon arrival, check into Sukamade Basic Guesthouse and take some time to unwind amidst the tranquil surroundings. As night falls, gear up for an extraordinary adventure – a guided excursion to witness majestic sea turtles laying their eggs on the sandy shores of Sukamade Beach.

Day 3: Turtle Release and Farewell

On the final day, prepare to be part of something truly magical as we release baby turtles into the vast expanse of the ocean at sunrise. Dive deeper into the realm of marine conservation as we visit the egg hatchery and gain insights into the fascinating life cycle of sea turtles.

Turtle Release and Farewell at Sukamade Beach Banyuwangi

In Banyuwangi, specifically at Sukamade and Ngagelan beaches, you can witness the process of sea turtles laying eggs and releasing hatchlings back into the sea.  Sukamade Beach is renowned as the paradise for turtle nesting in Banyuwangi. Here, you can witness turtles laying eggs firsthand, observe turtle hatcheries, and participate in releasing hatchlings or baby turtles into the sea. Located within the Meru Betiri National Park area, this beach has become a destination for giant turtles from the Indian and Pacific Oceans to lay their eggs. This is due to its remote location, allowing turtles to nest safely with minimal human disturbance and other predators.

There are four species of turtles that lay eggs at Sukamade Beach, namely the Green Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, and Olive Ridley Turtle. Among these species, the Green Turtle is the most abundant in laying eggs at Sukamade Beach. Therefore, Sukamade Beach is also referred to as the best Green Turtle landing site in Indonesia.

With hearts full of cherished memories, we bid adieu to Rajegwesi and make our way back to Surabaya International Airport, where our journey concludes.
