The Legend of Java Coffee

javaprivatetour.com – Hey there, fellow adventurers! Today, let’s take a virtual journey back in time to the early 1900s, where the picturesque Priangan region unveiled a unique coffee tradition – the mouth-peeling of coffee beans. Believe it or not, this quirky method played a role in making Cianjur’s coffee legendary in Europe.

As historians Jan Breman and G.J Knaap reveal, Cianjur was the major supplier of coffee to the Dutch East India Company (VOC) since the 18th century. About half to three-quarters of the world’s coffee trade from VOC came from Priangan’s western part, precisely Cianjur.

The coffee supply soared when VOC enforced the “Preanger Stelsel” or Priangan System in 1720. Utilizing local aristocrats (menak and santana), VOC pressured communities to sell their products exclusively to them at low prices.

Around 1730, approximately four to six million pounds of coffee were shipped from Priangan to the Netherlands. VOC had no trouble marketing the bitter black bean they called “Java Coffee” in Europe. The popularity of “Java Coffee” was so intense that a priest named Francois Valentijn complained about Europe’s addiction to this black gem from the East Indies.

The Java coffee from Priangan (Cianjur) was of top-notch quality, making it VOC’s flagship product globally. Even during the Dutch East Indies era in the early 19th century, the financial coffers of the government, under the leadership of Herman Willem Daendels, experienced surplus thanks to the pleasure derived from this coffee.

Fast forward to 1994, and the love for Java coffee inspired James Gosling to name his legendary computer programming language “Java” along with the iconic steaming coffee cup logo. The creators (James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton) were so enamored with Java coffee that it became the perfect moniker for a language that now powers Android and thousands of other applications, from casual games like Angry Birds to advanced AI and Cloud Computing.
