Suramadu National Bridge is a bridge that crosses the Madura Strait, connecting Java Island (in Surabaya) and Madura Island (in Bangkalan, precisely east of Kamal), Indonesia. With a length of 5,438 m, this bridge is the longest bridge in Indonesia today. The Suramadu Bridge consists of three parts, namely the causeway, the approach bridge, and the main bridge.
Ground Breaking of the bridge construction was carried out by President Megawati Sukarnoputri on August 20, 2003 and was opened and inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on June 10, 2009. The construction of this bridge is intended to accelerate development on Madura Island, covering the infrastructure and economic sectors in Madura, which are relatively left behind compared to other regions in East Java Province. Estimated cost of building this bridge is 4.5 trillion rupiah.
The construction of this bridge was carried out from three sides, both the Bangkalan side and the Surabaya side. Meanwhile, a mid-span construction consisting of the main bridge and approach bridge are also carried out simultaneously.
