Administratively, Mount Semeru is included in the area of ??two districts, namely Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency. While from the geographical position, Mount Semeru is located between 8 degrees south latitude and 112 degrees east longitude. This mountain is included in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area.
Because it is located in a strategic area, Mount Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes. There are two main routes to reach Ranupane Village, the last village to visit this mountain, namely from Malang City and from Lumajang City.
The route from Malang is a path that many climbers of Mount Semeru pass. It can start from Malang, Tumpang, Poncokusumo, Klakah Hut, Ngadas, and Ranupane. The distance to pass this path takes approximately three to four hours. Along the way, you will be treated to cool mountain views and winding roads and very deep ravines on the right and left.
While from Lumajang, although this path is somewhat shorter, it is less popular among climbers. With a distance of only one to two hours, this path can be started from Lumajang, Senduro, and Bumi Ranupane. Apart from these two paths, heading to Mount Semeru can also depart from Pasuruan. From here, the climbers continue their journey to Warung Dowo, Tosari, Wonokitri, Penjakanan, Bromo, Semeru. Meanwhile, if from Probolinggo, can take the path Tongas, Lumbang, Sukapura, Ngadisari, Cemoro Lawang, Bromo, and Semeru or Ketapang, Patalan, Sukapura, Ngadisari, Cemoro Lawang, Bromo, and Semeru.
Climbing to Mount Semeru should be done in the dry season, which is in June, July, August, and September. Because, during the rainy season, frequent storms and landslides occur all the way to this mountain. In addition, the climbers are also advised not to go to Jonggring Saloko crater because of the poisonous gas and lava flows.
